This session blends brief lecture and case studies to engage participants in identifying the ways in which implicit biases sneak into early intervention services provision. Together, we'll examine how these our implicit biases shape interactions without us realizing it and discuss strategies to provide more culturally responsive EI services.
Megan Schumaker Murphy, Ed.D. earned her doctorate at DePaul University. She spent ten years as an early intervention developmental therapist in Illinois and was the IDTA's Legislative Chair from 2015-2017. Currently, Megan is an assistant professor of early childhood education at Salem State University's McKeown School of Education. Her research and writing focuses on understanding and diversifying the EI and early childhood workforce and supporting EI providers and early childhood teachers in working toward more culturally sustaining and Equitible practices. Her most recent article, Supporting Male Caregivers During EI Sessions, is available online in Young Exceptional Children. Megan lives with her family in Salem, MA. In her spare time, she curates an Instagram account of her horse wearing silly hats.
